CPI 260 Flexibility Scale

Author: Harrison G. Gough

The Flexibility (Fx) Scale measures an individual’s ability to adapt to changing circumstances and adjust their approach as needed. It highlights openness to new ideas, responsiveness to feedback, and a willingness to explore alternative solutions. This scale reflects how effectively a person navigates dynamic environments and embraces innovation.

The scale is part of the California Psychological Inventory (CPI), a well-established tool for understanding personality characteristics that contribute to effective behavior in various contexts. This scale is frequently used in leadership development and organizational coaching to identify strengths and developmental opportunities.

High scores on Fx are indicative of a number of favorable attributes, including zest, imaginativeness, spontaneity, good ability to adapt to change and the unexpected, and an adventurous spirit. But along with this, especially at very high scores, goes undependability, too much volatility, and easy irritability when things move too slowly or are seen as routinized. (p. 146)
