World Health Organization calling Burnout an Occupational Phenomenon

Dr. Christina Maslach, author of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) calls it: The “Burnout Shop” As Business Model.

Human costs include:
  • Long-term stress; health problems
  • Physical exhaustion
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Disruptions of personal life
  • Loss of self-worth & achievements
  • Burnout
  • Depression, anxiety
  • Suicide
The World Health Organization is including burnout in the ICD-11 (International Classification of Diseases): https://www.who.int/mental_health/evidence/burn-out/en/ 
The ICD-11 burnout definition aligns with the MBI measurements, and it identifies burnout as an occupational phenomenon. For this reason, the Areas of Worklife Survey (AWS) is frequently administered as a companion instrument with the MBI.
