Identifies major areas for counseling interaction
Jane E. Myers
The Older Persons Counseling Needs Survey (OPCNS) by Jane E. Myers was developed for use with persons aged sixty and above to assess both the needs of older persons and their desires for counseling. The OPCNS is especially useful in evaluating older persons while avoiding or transcending cultural stereotypes which are frequently applied to older adults. Concerns addressed include personal, social or interpersonal, activity, and environment. It can be used for both group screening and individual exploration.

About the OPCNS
The items for the OPCNS were derived from a review of the literature in gerontology, psychology, and counseling relative to the older population. Areas of concern in the lives of older people were identified according to four main categories: personal concerns, social or interpersonal concerns, activity concerns, and environmental concerns.
The primary uses of the OPCNS are to identify needs for counseling and desires to participate in counseling among older individuals, as well as to identify major areas for counseling interaction. Needs are distinguished from counseling desires according to the item stems. Needs are identified by responding to statements worded similarly to: "I am concerned about … my mental health." Desires for counseling (which is an expressed desire to talk to someone about a need) are identified by responses to statements worded as similarly to: "I would like to talk to someone about … my health situation." The respondents would then answer whether they Strongly Agree, Agree, Strongly Disagree, or Disagree with the item statements.
There are fifty-six statements with twenty-eight items about needs and twenty-eight items about wants and desires. The norms are for the population of older persons who are single or widowed, members of ethnic minority races, those who live in the homes of relatives or friends, those who live in adult congregate living facilities or foster homes for adults, those who have low levels of education, and those with low incomes.
